Have You Reached That Crossroad in Your Career?
Maybe you’ve been feeling it lately. That gentle but persistent whisper that asks, “Is this all there is?” Or perhaps it’s not so gentle, maybe the pressure is louder: bills piling up, children growing fast, job stability looking shaky, and you wondering if you’re making any real impact.
You’re not alone. Many professionals, especially in emerging industries like diagnostics, healthcare, or the life sciences, find themselves stuck in survival mode. The dreams of travel, growth, influence, and freedom seem distant. And yet, deep down, you know you’re made for more.
This article could be your mirror, your map, and maybe, your moment of clarity.
Let me take you through what someone just like you recently did, and how you too can map your career path with precision and possibility.
Step 1: Pause and Evaluate
Before jumping into a course or applying for the next job opening, sit with your story. Reflect on your journey so far.
Ask yourself:
- What have I studied?
- What industries have I worked in?
- What roles have brought me fulfillment?
- What problems do I feel drawn to solve?
- What kind of lifestyle do I want to build?
This is where the process begins.
Case Study: A Diagnostics Professional at a Crossroads
- Bachelors in Medical Laboratory Science
- MBA in Business Administration
- MSc in International Public Health
- Over a decade working in diagnostics commercialization and global health
And yet, there was tension. This person wanted to earn more. To travel more. Make more impact. And truly own their voice and visibility.
So we created a map. We called it the career reinvention map. Here’s what it looked like:
Step 2: Draw Your Possibility Paths
Ask yourself: “Given everything I’ve been exposed to, what are three to five meaningful career paths I can pursue that align with my calling, capabilities, and the current global market?” In this case, we used three
And here’s what emerged:
Pathway 1: Diagnostics Consultant
- Freelance or full-time consulting in diagnostics, laboratory systems, and market access
- Client work with NGOs, governments, and health agencies
- High impact, good pay, aligned with current expertise
- Steps to achieve: Build a strong CV, write thought pieces, pitch to consulting rosters, offer value on LinkedIn
Pathway 2: Public Health & International Development Professional
- Work with global health organizations, fellowships, UN bodies, NGOs
- Focus on health systems strengthening, policy, women’s health, NCDs
- Steps to achieve: Apply for Acumen/Obama Fellows, write policy-oriented articles, network in the sector
Pathway 3: Entrepreneur & Thought Leader
- Scale platforms: lab consulting brands, lab focused business, thought leadership newsletters, digital communities
- Create products, courses, content, communities
- Global speaking, brand collaborations, passive income streams
- Steps to achieve: Clarify offers, build visibility, publish content, engage community, monetize
Please note that this will differ from person to person based on your background, experience, exposure and education.
Step 3: Research the Earning Potential & Lifestyle Fit
Once you define your three paths, research them. What are the:
- Top earning potentials?
- Travel opportunities?
- Freedom & flexibility they offer?
- Long-term scalability?
This part is critical. It helps you make informed decisions, not just emotional ones.
Step 4: Build Your Reinvention Package
Then we strategically developed the Reinvention Package:
- 3 professionally tailored CVs (for each path)
- Updated LinkedIn bio and About Me section
- A vision board & affirmation journal
- A 90-day Opportunity Strategy Calendar
- Outreach and application templates
- Visibility plan to publish and speak (optional but was crucial for this path)
And the result? Clarity. A new direction. And the confidence to follow through.
Step 5: Join a Supportive Community
You don’t have to walk this alone.
That’s why #BenchToBusinessFellows was launched, a growing community of Medical Laboratory Scientists and health professionals who are pivoting from the bench to purpose-aligned careers in business, public health, strategy, and thought leadership.
If you’re ready to:

Final Thoughts
You don’t have to abandon your past to walk into your future. You can build on it. Expand it. Translate it.
Whether your next level means becoming a consultant, a founder, a speaker, or a global health policy maker-your clarity starts with a map.
You don’t have to pick just one thing. You just need to pick the next right thing.
Let’s build it, together.
